Description

A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that blocks and prevents blood flow to the arteries in the lungs. In most cases, the clot forms in the deep veins of the legs and then reaches the lungs. In rare cases, blood clots form in veins in other parts of the body. The formation of a blood clot in one or more deep veins in the body is known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

When a pulmonary embolism occurs, one or more clots block the flow of blood to the lungs and can therefore be life-threatening. However, prompt treatment can dramatically reduce the risk of death. Taking steps to prevent blood clots from forming in the legs will help prevent pulmonary embolism.

Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism can vary widely, depending on the size of the area of the lung involved, the size of the clot, and whether you have an underlying lung or heart condition.

Common symptoms include:

● Shortness of breath. This symptom usually comes on suddenly, even at rest, and worsens with physical activity.
● Chest pain. You may feel like you are having a heart attack. When you take a deep breath, you often feel a sharp pain that can prevent you from breathing deeply. You may also feel pain when you cough, bend or stoop.
● Fainting. If your heart rate or blood pressure drops suddenly, you may faint (syncope).

Other symptoms that may occur when a pulmonary embolism occurs include:

● Coughing up blood or sputum with blood in it
● Fast or irregular heartbeat
● Lightheadedness or dizziness
● Excessive sweating
● Fever
● Leg pain and/or swelling, usually in the back of the calf
● Eczema or skin discoloration (cyanosis)
