Description

Pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease that occurs in damaged and scarred lung tissue. This thickened, stiff tissue makes it difficult for the lungs to work properly. Pulmonary fibrosis can worsen over time. In some people, the condition can remain stable for a long time, while in others it worsens more quickly. As the condition worsens, the person’s shortness of breath gets worse.

The scarring that occurs in pulmonary fibrosis may be due to a number of factors. Doctors and other health care professionals are often unable to definitively identify the cause of the problem. If a cause cannot be found, the condition is called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis usually occurs in middle-aged and older adults. Sometimes, children and infants can also develop pulmonary fibrosis, but this is uncommon.

The damage to the lungs caused by pulmonary fibrosis cannot be repaired. Medications and various therapies can sometimes help slow the rate of fibrosis, reduce symptoms, and improve quality of life. For some people, a lung transplant may be an option.

Symptoms of pulmonary fibrosis may include:

● Shortness of breath.
● Dry cough.
● Extreme fatigue.
● Unintentional weight loss.
● Muscle and joint pain.
● Widening and rounding of the tips of the fingers or toes (i.e., mortar and pestle fingers).
