Description

Pulmonary edema is a condition caused by the accumulation of too much fluid in the lungs. This fluid collects in many of the alveoli in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing.

In most cases, pulmonary edema is due to heart problems. However, other causes can cause fluid to collect in the lungs. These include pneumonia, exposure to certain toxins, medications, trauma to the chest wall, and traveling or exercising at high altitudes.

Sudden onset of pulmonary edema (acute pulmonary edema) is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.

Pulmonary edema symptoms may come on suddenly or progress over time. The exact symptoms depend on the type of pulmonary edema.

Symptoms include:

● Sudden (acute) symptoms of pulmonary edema
● Difficulty breathing or extreme shortness of breath that gets worse with activity or lying down
● Sensation of choking or drowning that is more pronounced when lying down
● Frothy sputum when coughing, which may have blood in it
● Rapid, irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
● Anxiety, restlessness or a feeling that something bad is about to happen
● Cold, clammy skin
● Croup or shortness of breath when breathing
● Long-term (chronic) pulmonary edema signs and symptoms
● Waking up at night coughing or feeling short of breath; getting up and sitting down may relieve these symptoms
● Feeling breathless when moving around or lying down
● Fatigue
● Feeling more short of breath than usual during physical activity
● New or worsening cough
● Rapid weight gain
● Swelling of the legs and feet
● Croup

Signs and Symptoms of High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)
HAPE may occur in adults and children traveling to or exercising at high altitudes. Symptoms are similar to those of acute pulmonary edema and may include:

● Headache, which may be the initial symptom
● Shortness of breath with activity, which may evolve into shortness of breath at rest
● Inability to exercise to the same degree as before
● Dry cough, which is the initial symptom
● Cough with pink or bloody frothy sputum at a later time
● Extremely fast heartbeat (tachycardia)
● Weakness
● Chest pain
● Low-grade fever

Symptoms of high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) tend to get worse at night.
